Summer Sermon Series:
Memorize This! Colossians 3:1-17

Overview: Memorizing scripture may not seem as important a skill at it once was, given that we all can all have Bibles in our pockets via our smartphones… in multiple translations, no less! But if we can rediscover scripture memorization as a spiritual discipline that brings us closer to God and actually changes us from the inside out, then it is like finding lost treasure. Memorizing a large and theologically rich portion of scripture like Colossians 3:1-17 doesn’t just strengthen our memory muscles; it works its way into our very being. It’s a fun challenge that we can encourage one another to take on over the summer.

Audience: Believers who may never have attempted scripture memorization before, and likely have not given deep attention to Paul’s rich Christology and its ethical implications. Because folks will be in and out of church over the summer due to family vacations, this series will provide some continuity and make it easier for folks to feel that they can always stay connected to our shared work even while they are away.

June 11 (Introduction & Colossians 3:1) So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

June 18 (Colossians 3:2-3) Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth, 3 for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

June 25 (Colossians 3:4) When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

July 2 - God & Country Sunday, Communion Sunday  (Colossians 3:5-8) Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. 7 These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. 8 But now you must get rid of all such things: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth.

July 9 (Colossians 3:9-11) 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices 10 and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. 11 In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, enslaved and free, but Christ is all and in all!

July 16 (Colossians 3:12-13) 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

July 23 (Colossians 3:14-15) 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

July 30 (Colossians 3:16-17) 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
